Surface Printed, Energy Cured Biodegradable Flexible Packaging – What’s Needed to Make This a Reality

Friday, June 9, 2023 from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM EDT

Speaker: Brad Rodgers, VP of Technology, Danimer Scientific

Moderator: Todd Fayne, PepsiCo

Over the past decade or so, a growing number of biodegradable polymers have gone from academic research studies to commercial applications. Commercial scale production of these resins is continuing to grow at a staggering rate. Flexible packaging is one of the target applications for these new materials and there are multiple development programs going on globally with film manufacturers and converters. One gap that needs to be addressed is the surface printing and overprint coatings that are needed for these applications. These materials must also be compliant with the composting certification standards that exist today. This webinar will discuss the flexible packaging requirements for a compostable film and the process used to gain third party certification from BPI or TUV.

Brad Rodgers is a veteran of the plastics and packaging industry, who has dedicated over 30 years to improving sustainable packaging. Prior to joining Danimer Scientific, Rodgers led innovative packaging initiatives at PepsiCo, completing his tenure as Global R&D Director – Foods Packaging Discovery. In his current role as VP of Technology for Danimer Scientific, his experience developing products and processes to meet ambitious sustainability goals will focus on their signature material, Nodax polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), insuring it is adaptable for a wide range of applications as the company scales production to meet global demand for compostable and biodegradable packaging.
